I’m pretty sure you’ve had a Philly cheesesteak and I’m absolutely certain you’ve had a cheeseburger. But have you had a Philly cheeseburger? What’s that, you ask? It’s a cross between two iconic dishes for an incredible gameday appetizer or delicious family meal.

Philly Cheeseburger Sliders

This recipe uses Omaha Steaks ground beef sliders. These 2 oz all-beef patties are made for creativity and give each bite its own unique flavors. Take this recipe to the next level with filet mignon sliders, ground from buttery filet mignon. To cook the sliders, simply season with salt and pepper and give a nice hard sear in a hot skillet, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Preparing the Mushroom and Onions

Tender caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms are the start of any great cheesesteak. Today, we’re adding them to a juicy, delicious burger for a spin on this Philly favorite. Start by sautéing the sliced onions until slightly caramelized and tender. Then, add sliced baby Portobello mushrooms and cook until tender.

Assembling the Philly Cheeseburger

Add a dollop of the cooked mushrooms and onions to each slider and top with a slice of provolone cheese. Melt the cheese by adding a little water to the pan and covering for about a minute or until cheese is melted. Add the sliders to a toasted bun and top with sriracha mayo and provolone cheese sauce for a delicious Philly cheeseburger. It’s almost too cute to eat. Almost.

  • 2 T. unsalted butter
  • 4 oz. baby portobello mushrooms sliced
  • 1/2 cup small diced yellow onion
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 T. olive oil
  • 1/2 cup water

Sriracha Mayonnaise

  • 1 T. lemon juice
  • 1 T. sriracha chili sauce

Provolone Cheese Sauce

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • ¼ t. garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Philly Cheeseburgers

  • Add 2 T. olive oil to a medium-sized pan and bring to medium-high heat.
  • Sauté onions until slightly caramelized and tender, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Add mushrooms and a pinch of salt and pepper to sauté pan. Sauté mushrooms until tender, about 4 to 5 minutes; season to taste and set aside.
  • In a large pan add remaining 1 T. oil, and season both sides of burger slider patties, sear on both sides about 3 to 4 mins per side.
  • Place a spoonful of mushrooms and onions on top of each burger, and top with a provolone cheese slice.
  • Place water in pan and cover the pan; steaming for about 45 seconds to 1 minute until cheese melts.
  • Meanwhile, toast slider buns cut side down in a large pan with unsalted butter. When toasted, remove and set aside.

Sriracha Mayonnaise

  • Place all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk until well incorporated. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Provolone Cheese Sauce

  • Bring heavy cream to a boil in small saucepan and whisk in cheese and garlic powder. Reduce to a simmer for about 6 to 8 minutes until thickened and sauce-like. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Assemble sliders:

  • Spread sriracha mayonnaise (recipe below) on bottom of toasted buns. Place slider on bun and top with provolone cheese sauce (recipe below). Place top bun on slider and enjoy!
