One of the greatest benefits of our products is that they arrive at your door frozen in a custom-designed cooler that ensures your items stay frozen throughout the shipping process. But when it comes time to enjoy your Filet Mignon or Chateaubriand Roast with family and friends it’s important to thaw your grilling goodies properly. Following the simple steps listed below will guarantee that preparation and thawing items for your next meal is as worry-free as possible.
For starters, never thaw your products at room temperature. Thawing in the refrigerator will allow for juicier, more flavorful steaks. Leaving your items in the vacuum-sealed packaging, remove them from their cardboard boxes and place on a plate or platter in a single layer. Do not double stack your items during thawing as this will increase the amount of time needed to thaw completely through. You can use the chart below as a good guide in estimating how long various items may take to thaw:
Meat | Refrigerator (36 to 40° F) |
Large Roast | 4 to 7 hours per pound |
Small Roast | 3 to 5 hours per pound |
1 inch Steak | 12 to 14 hours |
Whole Turkey | 1 day per 4 to 5 pounds |
Poultry Parts | 1 day per 1 to 2 pounds |
If you’re in a pinch and your guests are due to arrive in short order, there is also the option of thawing items in a mixing bowl or tupperware of cold water. Leaving items in their vacuum-sealed packaging, simple place them in a container of cold water to safely thaw your items more quickly. For example, using this method will allow for a Filet Mignons to thaw completely in 30-45 minutes.
While it is our least recommended method, thawing your items in the microwave is also an option. Meats thawed in the microwave will lose more of their natural juices, and therefore the final product may be drier and less tender than when thawed using the refrigerator or cold water methods described above. If you choose to thaw your steaks in the microwave, keep the following in mind: Leave meat in wrapping, do not puncture, watch carefully as the outer portions will thaw first. Standing time will complete thawing in the center.
Now that you’ve thawed your Omaha Steaks items the next step is to simply season and enjoy! For more cooking tips and recipe ideas be sure to check out the Recipes and How To tabs above.
