How to Pan Sear Mahi Mahi
Even though there are several ways to cook mahi mahi, one of the easiest ways is to sauté it in a pan. Check out our seafood cooking chart and the Omaha Steaks Mobile App with a cooking timer for extra help during the cooking process.
1. Thaw Mahi Mahi
To preserve the flavors and ocean-freshness we recommend thawing your mahi mahi fillets in your refrigerator overnight. The gradual thawing is the best method for keeping freshness intact. To thaw, remove fillets from original packaging, place in resealable bag, and thaw in refrigerator at least 7 hours. If you need your fillets thawed quicker, thawing in cold water is acceptable too. Simply unpackage the desired number of fillets and place them in a resealable bag. Remove as much air from the bag as possible and submerge in cold water for approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour. Cook and consume within 2 days.
2. Preheat Pan to Medium Heat
Start by preheating your skillet to medium or medium-high heat. Add a dash of oil to the skillet as it preheats. This helps to make flipping your fish easier.
3. Season Mahi Mahi
While your skillet is preheating, season your fillets. Add melted butter or oil and season lightly with your favorite marinade, seasoning, or our Omaha Steaks Signature Seafood Seasoning.
4. Pan Sear Mahi Mahi
Once your skillet is hot, place each mahi mahi fillet into your pan and cook for 6-7 minutes. Flip your fillets and cook for another 5-6 minutes. Remember, mahi mahi is a very lean fish which can make it very easy to dry out. Be sure to keep a close eye during the entire cooking process. You’ll know your mahi mahi has finished cooking when it is opaque throughout and reaches an internal temperature of 145° Fahrenheit. Serve your mahi mahi with lemon slices for a light zing of citrus to complement your fish. Enjoy!
