Can you smell that? That’s charcoal and smoke. It’s wood chips and cracklin. Grill season is upon us! And what a better way to ring in the glory of summer than by having amazing meat delivered and hosting a big old fashioned barbecue bash of your own! When the temps finally peaked into the 70s, I called up some friends, fired up the grill and did just that! I designed a fun little do-it-yourself steak station and let my guests go to town. With my selection, Omaha Steaks Private Reserve® Executive Suite (juicy tender cuts of filet mignon and strip steak) from Omaha Steaks, guests could pick their cut, cook it to their likeness (read: rare), and top with what they enjoyed. It made for a perfect stress free dinner party shared with great company and good food!
How to Make a Great Steak Topping Station
Don’t worry about coming up with a great steak dinner. A great steak stands alone as the star of the show. But, these fun little tips make for great toppings and get your company involved.
Season the steaks with salt and pepper and grill – remember those filets are thick and are going to take a few minutes longer than the strip steaks. While the steaks are cooking, have your guests create their own kabobs.
Arrange kabobs out with fresh mushrooms, peppers, onions, asparagus, and tomatoes for guests to pick and choose which they would like as their own toppings. Grill these along side the steaks for the last 3 to 5 minutes, flipping once halfway through.
Polish the steaks off with a dollop of herb butter. Let 8 tablespoons of unsalted butter come to room temperature. Finely mince a combination of herbs, (rosemary, chives, thyme, or parsley are great!) and whip the herbs, ¼ teaspoon smoked salt, and the butter together. Wrap in plastic wrap and form into a log. Place in fridge to set. When ready to serve, let the butter sit out for 20 minutes before the steaks are done. Slice off small portions to top each steak in style. The melting butter glazes the steak in style while adding the wonderful rich flavor from the fresh herbs.
Have your guests pitch in and bring a side dish. It’s less stress for you and makes everyone feel like they contributed.
Finally, have a few fresh light beers or summer mocktails on hand for everyone to enjoy while you share your great meal together!
