How to Grill Shrimp

The Block

Many of us have experienced challenges grilling shrimp in the past – shrimp falling through the grill cracks or overcooking on the grill. So our chef team put together this easy guide on how to grill shrimp! These tried-and-true techniques will have you back at the grill in no time!

How to Grill Shrimp

1. Thaw Shrimp

To prepare shrimp for grilling, they need to be completely thawed. To thaw, remove product from original packaging, place in a resealable bag, and thaw in refrigerator for at least 6-7 hours. To thaw in water, remove product from original packaging, place in a resealable bag, then submerge bag in cold water for 30-45 minutes. Once thawed, consume within 1-2 days.

2. Preheat Grill

Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Clean and oil grill grates.

3. Prep & Skewer Shrimp

It’s important to get the shrimp nice and dry in order to achieve grill marks as quickly as possible so you don’t overcook them. We like to lay them out on a paper towel–lined plate, then refrigerate, uncovered, before grilling.

To prevent the shrimp from falling through the grates, thread them onto skewers first. We recommend lining them up and skewering them with two skewers snugly so they’re hugging each other. If using bamboo skewers, soak them in cold water for 30 minutes first to prevent them from burning. Alternatively, wrap the ends of the skewers in foil to keep them from scorching.

Add shrimp to the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes per side.To ensure your shrimp are fully cooked, cook until opaque and reach a minimum internal temperature of 145° Fahrenheit as indicted by a food thermometer.
