So what if you haven’t honed your body and mind to peak physical condition? So what if you don’t have a giant cavern of technological whatzits under your house?
You know what you do have? A kitchen. And this place of brilliant food preparation (and inexplicable party gathering spot) is filled with all sorts of wondrous utensils, gadgets, and gizmos that’d make even The Dark Knight raise a perfectly manicured eyebrow.
But riddle me this: With so many wonderful toys, which kitchen utensils should you keep right at hand when rescuing your family from the nefarious forces of H.U.N.G.E.R?
Protect Yourself
It’s a well-known fact that skin and extreme heat don’t play nice. Especially when said heat is trapped inside splattering grease. Protect yourself by finding thick and sturdy wearables when cooking.
- Apron – Try and find one with pockets to keep what you need handy.
- Oven Mitts – Flexibility, gripping ability, and how to clean are just as important parameters as heat resistance.
Cut to the Chase
Most likely, you’ll be doing a great deal of slicing and chopping in the kitchen. That’s why we recommend you consider your set of knives less of a general purchase and more of an investment.
- Chef’s Knife – 8 to 10 inches, used regularly for general chopping.
- Paring Knife – 3 inches, used for smaller, detailed chopping you might feel a little uncomfortable using the Chef’s Knife with.
- Boning Knife – Provides the flexibility to cut around bones in meat, poultry, and fish.
- Serrated Knife – Great for slicing bread. But also great for slicing waxy or smooth surfaces like tomatoes.
- Kitchen Shears – A good pair is like the kitchen’s version of a Swiss Army Knife.
- Cutting Board – Wood provides more give so it won’t dull knives as quickly.
- Honing Steel – Run your straight-bladed knives along this to “hone” them and keep them sharp.
Soft Around the Edges
Not everything has to be sharp in your kitchen. Great for baking, flipping, and stirring, the right spatulas and spoons can be a boon.
- All-Purpose Silicone Spatula
- Mini Scrape Silicone Spatula – You’re not done with that jar yet. Scrape the rest out with this.
- Metal Spatula/Turner – Flip hot, yet delicate grillables like burgers and fish.
- Slotted Spoon – Get the item without the juice.
- Wooden Spoon – Won’t scratch the bottom of your pan as you stir.
- Ladle
Getting Grilled
Ah, your outside kitchen. Just like indoors there are some tools you always want to have around to make your grilling easier and more efficient.
- Grill Brush
- Spray Oil – Lightly oil proteins so seasonings adhere better and keep meat from sticking to the grates.
- Spray Bottle – Filled with water, this can be helpful to quell flare-ups.
- Seasonings
- Aluminum Foil
- Meat Thermometer
- Meat Lifters – When tongs are too unwieldy to handle heavier meats.
- Timer
A Measured Response
What’s the difference between a “pinch” or a “dash?” Exactly. That’s why we have tools to help us figure that out.
- Measuring Spoons
- Dry Ingredients Measuring Cups
- Liquid Ingredients Measuring Cups
Tools of the Trade
Lastly, make sure your utility belt is equipped with these sundry tools and your kitchen adventures will never be lost.
- Vegetable peeler – Make sure they’re comfortable in your hand.
- Metal Tongs – Great for flipping steaks or pulling out spaghetti.
Colander/Strainer - Grater
- Can Opener
- Cooling Rack
- Chef’s Wedge – Scrape bits and pieces into the bowl or trash without getting your hands dirty.
- Bag Clips – Gotta keep up with the freshness.
Your kitchen’s a far cry from Gotham City. And you’re not biffing and powing mooks dressed like clowns. But with these tools close at hand you can be confident that you’ll always be prepared – day or night – to save your little corner of the world from the relentless forces of H.U.N.G.E.R.
